Considering how 1-handed maces were confined to the realm of cavalry weapons in the video... Why bar maces weren't popular or as iconic as flanged maces? They would offer even more weapon surviveability due to the design. You established that the price wasn't an issue as flanged/winged maces weren't easy to make either way. P.S. I greatly enjoyed the logical way of thought throughout the video and I would appreciate your opinion on flails in the future. Particularly the varieties with extra long chains, long spikes and multiple heads and their applications.

Not sold these weren't just mail hauberks. The style of the Bayeux tapestry and limitations of the artists has to be taken into account. In art terms it's crude symbol drawing, and a hauberk covers the upper legs so you symbolize it covering the upper legs while you generally make the form of a human figure and you can see throughout how hard they're struggling just to keep the overall human form coherent. Trying to take the extra steps of embroidering hauberks hanging off the legs or any separation would just make the process more complicated. I think instead what we're looking at is guidelines set for a team of embroiderers who are certainly craftswomen and the Bayeux tapestry is beautiful thing, no offense to the embroiderers, but who are not artists devoted to creating accurate depictions of reality in the way we think of it with our modern post renaissance eyes. Coifs on the other hand I think you have a case for.

Definitely a different style to the German ones I saw at a few different castles in southern Germany and northern Switzerland. Those ones generally had the blade stop further up than that Spanish example (although I think I remember seeing one example without blade stops), the crossguards and pommels looked a bit more stout, and maybe a third of the examples were flamberged.

    • @torenbesnoren7929

Not really, its just that wallhangers make up a huge share of the market for swords. Actual high end smiths make amazing pieces with the enhanced technologies of today in addition to better steel. The balance part is a fair argument to some extent, though most mid to high end smiths have honestly just been using historical pieces for reference of weight and length distribution and modifying from there so for those the balance is probably functionally identical though we do lack ability to improve/innovate on certain handling characteristics due to them not being used anymore as weapons. Check out smiths like Gael Fabre, Dr. Fabric Cognot, Longsword Longleg, Arms and Armor, Danelli Armouries, Arann Reichhardt, Ancient Forge, Manning Imperial for high end greatsword replicas, there's even more that I didn't list. Even production model greatsword makers like Regenyei, Kvetun, Malleus Martialis (also does high end customs), etc., would likely have their blades be considered excellent back then. There aren't a huge amount of makers making such decorated pieces that are also functional like the one in this video though just due to how small the market is, not worth the effort for how much most people are willing to pay.

I'm told knife attacks are common there. I'd suggest some sort of concealed body armor, if that is legal there. If modern Kevlar ballistic armor is outlawed, maybe an old-fashioned chain mail shirt, like Bilbo's/Frodo's, would work. It should stop most stabbing and slashing attacks to the torso, and maybe offer some protection to the arms as well, depending on the lengths of the sleeves. Against potential acid throwing attacks, I'm at a loss. A politician can't very well campaign in a visored motorcycle helmet, can he? I suppose he might carry something in his hand that could serve as a shield, like an umbrella or a large clipboard.

Galeeren had a ramming sporn (?) well into 18th century. Last french ones had been build arround 1730. Last military use was in late 18th century (1770s or 1780s) during a naval battle between Russia and Ottoman Empire on turkish side. When in 1799 napoleonic troops conquered Venice, there was still an unarmed represenation Galeere of Venice Ruler called Doge. French troops took away pompeous decorations, and transformed the ship into a swimming gun battery. Ramming was in mediterran naval warfare never forgotten, in 1866 austrian admiral Tegethof won a naval battle against italian admiral Persano , still using ramming.
